Long before the prepackaged craft projects at Michael's and other craft supply stores...there were pinecones. Every holiday school project involved the amazing pinecone...nature's freebie!

I vividly remember making place card holders for Thanksgiving. This usually came home in a decorated brown paper lunch bag. One year, we also made a turkey centerpiece out of a baking potato and toothpicks.

At Christmas, the glitter was unleashed and the pinecones were heavily doused in sparkle. I can still remember the unique Christmas scent of pinecone sap, glue and glitter. (Not to mention the sap that stuck to your fingers and was impossible to remove) That specific scent captures Christmas for me. I go looking for it every year.

What plans do you have for the pinecone this season?
